While in Europe an Italian was laying the foundations to become the father of wireless telegraphy and radio, in Chile an employee of the  Postal and Telegraph Service ,  Ramón Norero  (1870-1952), was also carrying out  innovative experiments  in wireless telegraphy in the late 1890s.

After successive cuts of the submarine telegraph cable that linked Llanquihue with Chiloé, Norero, in his capacity as Inspector of Telegraphs,  managed to solve the problem with electromagnetic waves and without the need for cables . This fact  was recorded  in a travel report of the Frigate Captain of the Gunboat Pilcomayo, Roberto Maldonado, dated February 7, 1899. Regarding the fact, Captain Maldonado says the following in his report:

“In view of the fact that the telegraph cable that linked Chiloé with Llanquihue, in the  Chacao Channel , had been cut repeatedly due to the extraordinary current and the irregular bottom of this channel, on  September 17, 1898,  the Inspector of Telegraph Offices, Mr. Ramón Luis Norero, established  the new system of electromagnetic waves and without wires through the Chacao Channel , for this purpose he established two wire lines on both banks, more or less parallel, 2,000 meters long each between Punta Santa Teresa and Punta Coronel to the North and Punta Gallan and Punta Soledad to the South […] The vibration is transmitted by induction from one line to the other, receiving the alphabetic signals in a phone by the Morse system”.

This system installed by Norero, which in less than six months had already transmitted more than 5,000 telegrams through the Chacao Channel, would be the  first telegraphic communication using electromagnetic waves and without wires carried out in America , just one year after Marconi’s demonstration in Europe.
